This story was buried on page A-10 in the paper, above a “boil water” notice for some neighborhood in Gulfport. Apparently ‘W fatigue’ has finally settled in down here.

Parade magazine has recently made me aware of this new breed of cat. Breeders expect to have the Toyger looking like a tiger by the year 2017 or so. While this may sound like a great idea–I mean, who wouldn’t want a pygmy tiger loping around his house–I want to make it clear that this should only be the beginning. Besides research on pygmy tigers, I feel we must also demand that research on pygmy lions, pygmy giraffes, and pygmy elephants not be put on the back burner. Every home in the year 2017 should have at least these. A herd of pygmy elephants ambling through my kitchen while I sit at the table drinking coffee… that would be a good thing.

And even better, of course, would be an additional tribe of pygmy pygmies that would follow the herd and clean up the resulting miniature piles of elephant shit.

I enjoy how grand and metronomic the stars are, and I enjoy how chaotic the clouds are. And I enjoy how they inhabit the same bit of real estate, as far as I’m concerned. I can imagine what it would be like if their roles were reversed: there would be no fixed constellations; the stars would be in different places every time you looked at them. And the cotton candy/man on a roof/Abraham Lincoln’s head triad would float over my house every day around 4 o’clock.

It’s probably best the way it is.

Gunman kills 2 clowns in Colombian circus - CNN.com

Two clowns were shot and killed by an unidentified gunman during their performance at a traveling circus in the eastern Colombian town of Cucuta, police said Wednesday.One of the clowns was killed instantly, and the second died the next day in hospital.

I wonder if those clowns had it coming to them.

I was standing outside in the backyard in the dark a few minutes ago. There was an owl-shaped piece of wood that I noticed perched on top of one of the main branches of the neighbor’s cut-back pecan tree, and I gazed at it for a while, before it flew away.
