the decline & fall of Civilization

I picked up a couple pizzas at Dominos the other day; the total was $16.05. I gave the young person behind the counter $21.05, in order to make his life easier. He stared at the money for a second, then he pulled out a calculator to figure out how much he owed me.

    To many kids today, numbers are mysterious and fearsome. They are not things to be understood. “I put numbers into a calculator, and other numbers come out; what’s to understand?”

    What do these kids do when a calculator isn’t available?

    And numbers and the idea of numbers and the facility to manipulate numbers underlies so much of what we humans do. How can you be an adult human and not notice order? I fear for the species.
